Senior Silva uses the technique of Intaglio.  This is done by engraving a copper plate with acid, this plate is then used to stamp the initial engraving into the paper.  Each plate can be used for about 100 etchings before it is worn and is discarded.

Senior Silva soon became bored with plain etchings and felt that they needed more life.  So he turned to the Mixed-technique (combining two forms of art).  In this case after he makes an etching, he goes back and hand paints each one with a water color and oils.  He was the first artist to mix etching, water-color and oil all into one painting.

For his large works he will occasionally make a series of Lithographs to make the painting available to more people.  The Lithographs are never reprinted.  If you get # 20 of 150, then it is the only one with that number there will ever be.  He will also occasionally sell his Artist's Proofs.  Senior Silva does not do Prints only Lithographs which yield a higher quality reproduction.
